چکیده

Postural reflex activity during unperceived perturbation of standing was investigated in 38 elderly subjects (70-96 years old) and 10 younger adults (19-48 years old), and it was related in the elderly group to a history of unexplained falling in the 12 months prior to testing. Ankle torque (T) and ankle angle (A) were recorded during unperceived forward pulls to obtain the ankle stiffness (DeltaT/DeltaA), providing a measure of postural reflex activity at the ankle. Elderly nonfallers and younger adults had similar ranges of normalized ankle reflex stiffness. High ankle stiffness was significantly more common in elderly multiple fallers than in elderly nonfallers (p =.018). Furthermore, a majority of unstable elderly subjects who had reported a single unexplained fall also had unusually high ankle stiffness (p =.004). Multiple fallers and unstable subjects tended to overshoot backward on pull release in comparison with nonfallers (p =.003), which is suggestive of an overactive reflex response that might contribute to postural instability.

Ankle musculature latency measurement to varing angles of sudden external oblique perturbation in normal functionally unstable ankles

Abstract Background: Several studies have examined the reflex response of ankle musculature to sudden inversion in noninjured and injured subjects. To date, there have been no studies to determine the effect of versatile degrees & conditions of perturbation on the ankle musculature latency. The purpose of this study was to measure and determine whether there was a difference in ankle musculatu...

Direct measurement of human ankle stiffness during quiet standing: the intrinsic mechanical stiffness is insufficient for stability.

During quiet standing the human "inverted pendulum" sways irregularly. In previous work where subjects balanced a real inverted pendulum, we investigated what contribution the intrinsic mechanical ankle stiffness makes to achieve stability. Using the results of a plausible model, we suggested that intrinsic ankle stiffness is inadequate for providing stability. Here, using a piezo-electric tran...

Changes in sensory reweighting of proprioceptive information during standing balance with age and disease.

With sensory reweighting, reliable sensory information is selected over unreliable information during balance by dynamically combining this information. We used system identification techniques to show the weight and the adaptive process of weight change of proprioceptive information during standing balance with age and specific diseases. Ten healthy young subjects (aged between 20 and 30 yr) a...

Sway‐dependent changes in standing ankle stiffness caused by muscle thixotropy

KEY POINTS The passive stiffness of the calf muscles contributes to standing balance, although the properties of muscle tissue are highly labile. We investigated the effect of sway history upon intrinsic ankle stiffness and demonstrated reductions in stiffness of up to 43% during conditions of increased baseline sway. This sway dependence was most apparent when using low amplitude stiffness-mea...

Arm-free paraplegic standing--Part I: Control model synthesis and simulation.

The following paper is the first part of our investigation into the feasibility of arm-free paraplegic standing. A novel control strategy for unsupported paraplegic standing which utilizes the residual sensory and motor abilities of the thoracic spinal cord injured subjects is proposed. The strategy is based on voluntary and reflex activity of the paraplegic person's upper body and artificially...
